This makes sense: About 70 percent of Earth’s land surface is covered by clouds every day. Taken individually, most of these pictures captured by the Landsat sensors include some clouds. (Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 are only the most recent of these craft.) government’s Landsat program, a series of satellites that have photographed the Earth’s surface every 16 days since the 1970s. Mosaicking draws upon the vast archives of imagery that have been created by the U.S. Instead, Google engineers used a recently developed cartography technique called mosaicking. Neither of the images above were captured on a single shoot by a solitary satellite, the way that a camera might capture a snapshot. This “ghostly” runway effect points to how Google makes its maps cloudless in the first place. Its remoteness gives it a unique ecology, but-given its location in the middle of the tropical Indian Ocean-it is frequently obscured by clouds. Almost a thousand miles from Australia, the island was largely untouched by human settlement until the past two centuries. The improvements can be seen in the new map’s depiction of Christmas Island. Google had not updated its low- and medium-resolution satellite map in three years. Most importantly, this new map contains fewer clouds than before-only the second time Google has unveiled a “cloudless” map. The new map, which activates this week for all users of Google Maps and Google Earth, consists of orbital imagery that is newer, more detailed, and of higher contrast than the previous version. Google has added nearly 1.5 trillion pixels of new data to its service *. On Monday, it gets a makeover, and its many users will see something different when they examine the planet’s forests, fields, seas, and cities. Timelapse in Google Earth is possible because of the commitment to open and accessible data through NASA and the United States Geological Survey’s Landsat program (the world’s first and longest-running civilian Earth observation program) and the European Union’s Copernicus program with its Sentinel satellites.Ĭheck out the updated visualization today in Google Earth at g.co/timelapse, and on YouTube via g.co/timelapsevideos.More than 1 billion people use Google Maps every month, making it possibly the most popular atlas ever created. And people are using this imagery to convey the effects of these changes, like the 2022 documentary The Territory which uses Timelapse to show the devastation of deforestation across the Amazon and its effect on local communities. From researchers to teachers, anyone can use these videos to better understand our changing planet. You can also view a library of over 800 Timelapse videos for more than 300 locations at g.co/TimelapseVideos. The imagery also captures ways cities have adapted to combat climate change - like offshore wind farms in Middelgrunden, Denmark and a large-scale solar installation in Granada, Spain. Timelapse in Google Earth is a global, zoomable time-lapse video of the planet, providing evidence of earth’s dynamic changes - from irrigation systems emerging in the deserts of Egypt and meandering rivers shifting over time in the Amazon rainforest in Pucallpa, Peru to volcanic eruptions, logging and wildfires changing the landscape of California’s Lassen National Forest. I hate manuals and so being able to just dive in and create was a lot of fun and a major strength for me personally. I really enjoyed the overall look and feel of the GUI and think it is easy to navigate, which is always important for software like this in my opinion. The quality of map modelling is high and the fact it can work out tones via the Amp Match function makes it a really handy studio tool as well. It is almost never ending and if you think you would enjoy tweaking your tone, then I would highly recommend this software. However, if you buy both the BIAS Amp 2 Elite version and BIAS FX Pro you are looking at the best part of $500, which puts it at the top pricing tier when compared to the competition.īut, if you like to dabble and build your own amp tones, then actually it works out as a reasonable deal because you get a lot of choices and control over your virtual amp rig.įor me, the strength is in the customisation and also the ToneCloud, as both of these functions give you a vast amount of amps to build and play with. Yes and no, I like that it caters for all budgets via the various versions and that you can choose to add the optional effects software packages as well. The inclusion of a decent amount of good quality Impulse Responses including the Celestion speaker models is also huge plus point for BIAS Amp 2, as it is where you can ultimately manipulate the output of your virtual amp and something I have always found makes a marked difference when recording, especially here as you can combine it with a couple of virtual microphones and really get the most out of the having a flexible recording of your virtual amp. Overall, I found the amp models included to be pretty dynamic and touch sensitive, especially when run at higher sample rates. I also enjoyed downloading and trying out the amps from other users via the Positive Grid ToneCloud. This area is for sharing amp models and also the matched amps as well.īy using Amp Match it gives you the ability to learn amp sounds via either mic’ing your own amp or importing a guitar track with a specific amp tone you are chasing, A handy feature and one that can ‘get you in the ballpark’ for certain amp tones you are chasing. Of course, you don’t need or have to do this, but I would suggest it is one of the coolest aspects of this particular software package. You can easily get lost in this endless tweaking and if like me, you enjoy dabbling, then this is actually a lot of fun and allows you to create some very custom models to play through. It is a simple thing, but does make a difference and means less loading up time and overheads when you just want to play or build your own tones. One thing I did enjoy was that I can run BIAS Amp 2 without loading up my DAW, as it will happily run standalone and it means I could just audition and create my own patches quickly without needing to fire up Logic Pro X on my iMac. Currently, there is a sale on and so you can shave $30 off of each of those two prices as well. However, you can buy their BIAS FX Standard from $99 or the FX Pro at $199 if you want an integrated effects solution and the two work together, I did not test the effects and so will only be writing about my experiences with the Elite version of the software. Unlike Line 6’s Helix it does not include the effects, apart from a basic reverb and a noise gate, so you need to take this into account if you are really counting the pennies. It caters for different budgets, with the Standard version coming in at $99, Pro at $199 and Elite at $299. Positive Grid’s BIAS Amp 2 has three distinct versions, with the price rising as features are added. Liszt Collection of nineteenth-century engravings and images to browse and enjoy Favorite Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Liszt Collection Map of Dordogne, France I don’t think x86 could get going today with the way hardware works as easily. Not in the same way x86 did at the start. That was what ultimately killed MIPS, PPC, and Alpha despite all of them having some advantages. Without that who knows what we’d be running? x86 doesn’t have to be the best, it just has to be the cheapest for the performance. Intel probably doesn’t realize just how lucky they are that IBM insisted on a second source and they licensed the architecture. Because there is no off the shelf solution for any of these things with a competitive second source they will always struggle to gain market share because the costs will always be higher for the performance than the x86-64 world is. That said MIPS, PPC, Alpha AXP, and even to an extent ARM/ARM64 all face the same issue: cost (and compatibility). While I understand the economics of why the Alpha situation happened (and would always have happened for the same reason MIPs and PPC went away) there will always be a part of me that wonders “what could have been” if the 64bit version of NT had hit the market instead of the 32bit version and the benchmarks really did justify the expense. I’m just guessing about what happened afterward because nobody informed me that they had gotten Pinball working and added it back. Whatever the problem was, somebody fixed it, and then they went back and re-tested Pinball with this fix, and everything worked great, so they put Pinball back. Or maybe there was a compiler bug, and the compiler team fixed that. My theory as to what happened is that some time after I removed Pinball from the product, the C runtime team realized that they had a compatibility bug in the way they set the default rounding mode, and they fixed it. My guess is that it had to do with the default rounding mode established by the C runtime library. NCommander did find a collision detection bug on the Itanium, although that bug was nowhere as severe as the one that existed on the Alpha AXP. And that’s the system that had the broken collision detector. I could test my 64-bit port on a physical Alpha AXP system to validate that it was successful. The team set to work, and we had 64-bit Windows running on physical Alpha AXP hardware long before we had any physical Itanium hardware. The hard part was going from 32-bit to 64-bit. Once you got a 64-bit version of Windows working for the Alpha AXP, it should be a comparatively small amount of additional work to port it to Itanium. The assumption was somewhat validated by experience: The 32-bit Windows code base had been ported to many 32-bit processors, with relatively few architecture-specific issues. The assumption is that most of the effort in porting Windows to the Itanium is in the 32-bit to 64-bit transition, and not in dealing with quirks of the specific 64-bit processor you are porting to. But the Alpha AXP did have the advantage of existing in physical form, so the system could finish booting before the heat death of the universe. Now, 64-bit Windows on the Alpha AXP would never ship. Solution: Port the Alpha AXP version of 32-bit Windows to 64-bit Windows. It’s just that 32-bit Windows used only the 32-bit subset. The Alpha AXP is internally a 64-bit processor. No Itanium hardware on the immediate horizon.A 32-bit version of Windows that runs on the Alpha AXP.A bunch of developers who have experience with the Alpha AXP.A lot of Alpha AXP machines sitting around with nothing to do.In 1999, Compaq announced that it would no longer support Windows on the Alpha AXP, which left a lot of Windows team members with cumbersome paperweights on their desks. On the other hand, the Windows team did have access to a lot of copies of another 64-bit processor: The Alpha AXP. Clearly not the development environment you wanted when porting millions of lines of code. Booting Windows on an Itanium simulator took forever. The only way you could run any Itanium code was to run it in a simulator. When the 64-bit Windows project started, there was no Itanium hardware yet. I was amazed at the level of thoroughness (and the fortitude it required to get those Itanium systems up and running, much less debug them), but there’s one version of 64-bit Windows that NCommander didn’t try out, and that’s the one that’s relevant to the story. Retrocomputing enthusiast NCommander even undertook a Zapruder-level analysis of all of the 64-bit versions of Windows he could find to prove or disprove my story. One point of contention is over my claim that I removed Pinball from Windows because I couldn’t get the 64-bit version to work. People keep asking if it can be brought back. My proudest achievement of Windows XP was fixing the game so it didn’t consume 100% CPU. A customer used their support contract to ask how to change among the three levels of play in Space Cadet Pinball. Space Cadet Pinball has a special place in the hearts of many Windows enthusiasts. Sure, you can take a swipe at some predators with your survival knife to keep them from turning you into their next meal, but it doesn’t feature any mechanics outside of simply swinging your weapon (which is actually mainly used for resource gathering) to keep them at bay. It is indeed a survival game where you’ll need to keep your hunger and thirst meters topped up (although there is a mode which disables these), but there’s practically no combat featured at all. Well, I wasn’t too far off the mark, but my original thoughts present a much more basic version of what Subnautica actually is. I presumed it would be the sort of survival game in which I’d loot everything not nailed down to earn resources to upgrade my gear and weapons in order to fight off what lurks in the depths of an alien world. I wasn’t too sure, initially, what Subnautica would be. This time around, I tried the nautical survival-crafting game: Subnautica. Will I find something new to add to my list of favourite games? Or will I find something that isn’t worth talking about outside this article? Playing through a full half hour, no matter how infuriating it gets or how many times I fail, to see if this is the game for me. Sad, because i love the game and would love to keep playing it.// Articles // 22nd May 2023 - 9 months ago // By Mike Crewe So I Tried… SubnauticaĮach edition of So I Tried… sees a member of staff trying a game that they have never played before. I played hours of borderlands 2 an hour ago, i played multiple other games on this laptop before, and had no crashes. Keeping it at least playable during introducing new features would be a great achievement, do you not think?Īnd i know, you suspect it's issue on users side but i sincerely think it isn't. gen, intel pro 620, without high-end graphics, but it was playable before. I use my laptop with windows, SSD, 8GB ram, core i5 8. I use same computer on which I played dozens on games including earlier versions of 'subnautica below zero'. after this release i can not event create game - it crashes after i try to start it on freedom mode. then after lost ship it start getting crashes after ~5 minutesģ. release before lost ship brought in crashes after ~20 min playtime (multiple, repeatable - i measured)Ģ. I had great respect during start of subnautica below zero, but now each release gets worse and worse, so i'm seriously worried about future of the game:ġ. I had great respect for very fine first part and spent dozens (or hundreds) of hours playing first subnautica. So dear fellow developers, please consider it. Quality of game dropped with each new release significantly to being completely unplayable for me and i assume some more players, especially after "frostbite". Not mocking you guys, neither being angry, but you seriously start needing more serious bug tracking software than forum. Seriously? Pastebin? You guys know that you can easily setup bug tracking system which would allow players to upload attachments? I can not post links, so search for bugzilla and attachments. That's all the stuff, once I get permissions I may or may not actually make a post for this This just happens whenever descending the ladders close to the ground that are within tight spaces, it seems, particularly those close to the bunker. The ladders in the glacial basin are prone to clipping the player underneath the terrain and into the water below the biome when descending. This goes away upon saving and quitting and reloading the game. Just an empty placeholder in my inventory. However, there is no prompt to drop it or consume it, no nothing. All the consumables in supply drops are glitched, where upon consuming the item from the menu, the item continues to display in inventory, as though I hadn't consumed it yet. Tried multiple times after saving and quitting with same result. I just load the game up normally, no cheats activated or anything, and when I approach the items for which I don't yet have the blueprints, nothing happens. The old nuclear reactor in the wreckage is also not scan-able. This includes the nuclear reactor, several indoor potting plants, planting walls, and a couple of other objects. A number of base modules which are implemented into the game and available in creative (at least the last time I checked) which are found in abandoned bases, particularly base omega, are not scan-able. Just a lot of empty with the sole exception of the ship wreckage. Ok so the most annoying bug I've found is that nearly everything said to be found within the crashed ships on the wiki is nowhere to be found, no alleged power cells, batteries, upgrades, reactor rods, water bottles, etc. I'll just list some bugs here, build 19404 Survival mode. Not a fan of having to wait an entire day just to make a visible post regarding bugs, but oh well.
